Tips For Using Solid Wood Furniture

Thursday,June 13,2019

It is necessary to master the small skills of using solid wood furniture, especially in winter. Today I will teach you how to use them.

Wipe the surface of solid wood furniture with a damp cloth regularly

It is best to use a clean soft cloth when wiping, such as an old T-shirt or a soft baby cloth. Wet the cotton cloth and wring it dry before use, because the wet cloth can reduce friction and maintain the beauty of solid wood furniture. At the same time, it also helps to reduce the adsorption of dust by static electricity, which is beneficial to remove the dust on the surface of the furniture. Be careful when cleaning and dusting, because you may cause some damage to the appearance of solid wood furniture. Finally, avoid moisture remaining on the surface of the furniture. It is recommended to wipe it again with a dry cloth. Remember not to wipe your solid wood furniture with a sponge or tableware cleaning utensils.

Use high-quality furniture wax sparingly

Solid wood furniture generally requires regular furniture wax maintenance, such as beeswax and wood wax, under normal circumstances, once or twice a year, so that the furniture looks shiny and the surface will not be vacuumed, making it easier to clean. And it can lock the moisture in the wood, effectively preventing the furniture from cracking and deforming. If waxing is too frequent, the surface of solid wood furniture will become very sticky, and it will be contaminated with dirt such as dust.

Before using glazing wax on solid wood furniture, the old wax should be wiped off with mild non-alkaline soapy water, and the surface of the paint layer should be checked to see if it is intact. First use a fine cotton cloth to wipe off the dust on the surface. For stains that have remained for a long time or are difficult to remove, use a cotton cloth dipped in a small amount of gasoline or alcohol to wipe. Then use a small piece of cotton cloth dipped in an appropriate amount of glazing wax to spread over a large area, and then use a larger dry cloth to wipe the wax evenly in the form of a circle.

Regularly check whether the mortise and tenon structure and other places are loose or fall off The mortise and tenon structure is crucial to solid wood furniture. Once it becomes loose or falls off, the solid wood furniture cannot continue to be used. Of course, the legs, moldings, etc. should also be found and re-glued immediately to prevent further damage. At ordinary times, pay attention to check whether there are parts falling off, degumming, tenon breakage, loose mortise, etc. at these joints. If the screw and other parts fall off, you can clean the screw hole first, then fill a thin wooden strip in the hole, and finally reinstall the screw. If the tenon breaks, you need to ask professional maintenance personnel to deal with it.

Check for signs of moths

After the moth eats, a very small hole is formed in the wood, sometimes accompanied by some very fine dust. Such holes are often called "pilot holes" and are left by some larvae living in solid wood furniture until they become adults and leave. Once the signs of this moth formation are found, it must be treated with insect repellant at this time. This material is applied to the unfinished surface and injected into the pilot hole. This insect repellant not only kills existing borers, but also protects furniture from re-infestation.

Tips for using solid wood furniture with special attention in winter

Solid wood is easily affected by the humidity of the environment, and there will be changes in swelling and shrinkage. In winter, do not frequently switch on and off the air conditioner to cause excessive changes in temperature and humidity, otherwise even the best quality solid wood furniture will sometimes be deformed and cracked.

The indoor air in winter is relatively dry, which is easy to cause cracking that is difficult to repair. You can improve (increase) the indoor humidity by using a humidifier, placing a pot of clean water or some green plants indoors, which can effectively solve the cracking of solid wood furniture.

But at the same time, excessive indoor humidification is not good, it may cause the dry humidity of solid wood furniture to change too much in a short time, causing cracking.

Pay special attention to the following two points:

Temperature control: It is freezing cold in winter, and every family will use heating equipment to keep warm. Sometimes in order to get closer to the heat source, solid wood furniture and heating equipment are brought close without knowing it. As everyone knows, these furniture are afraid of high temperature, and baking at high temperature for a long time will easily cause the wood to lose moisture, cause local cracking, deformation, and deterioration of the paint film. It is best to place solid wood furniture at least 1 meter away from the heating equipment.
